Make a Difference
“The YMCA is committed to providing programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. We build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.” If you and your family need financial assistance in paying fees for YMCA programs or membership, just ask. Download an Open Doors financial assistance application. Over 20% of the members at the Outer Banks Family YMCA participate in the Open Doors scholarship program. One out of every five members is on a scholarship. Individuals and families that would otherwise be unable to afford the YMCA are able to do so because of the resources available through the Open Doors Scholarship program. Because of Open Doors, they are able to take part in all of the kids and adults programs at the YMCA such as group fitness, swimming lessons, child care, sports leagues, summer camp, and a long list of other activities. Scholarship members may be our friends and neighbors right here in the local community. The YMCA needs you to help us build people.
Testimonials from Open Doors members:
- “I would like to compliment one of your employees that really made a difference during one of our recent visits to the YMCA. My daughter and her girlfriend were swimming in the pool when the lifeguard started giving the girls some tips on how to improve their swimming skills. They had a great afternoon and improved their swimming skills. Sometimes it’s the little things that can make a difference”
- “Exercise is so important for me. I’m still in recovery from addiction and I use Yoga as a tool to help me cope with (the stress) in my life. My son is 75 lbs. over-weight and…I have committed to him that I would work out with him two times a week and hope and pray that he will be there more. Thanks for all your help; I’m so grateful for the Open Doors program.”
- “On April 26th, I was hit head on by a drunk driver. I have been out of work 3 months and the injuries to my legs and hop require long rehab and recovery. I don’t know when I will be able to walk normal again.” This scholarship member has since joined the Outer Banks Family YMCA on an Open Doors Scholarship and began his physical therapy at our facility. He used a combination of therapy in the indoor pool and fitness center to regain his footing. Today he is a walking testimony to the success of the Open Doors program.
The Outer Banks Family YMCA’s goal is to raise money for the Open Doors Scholarship program, summer camps, youth programs, swimming lessons, and other core YMCA programs. Small donations can make a big difference. For example, $25 pays for the swimming lesson of a child whose family is an Open Doors member. The YMCA makes a difference in people’s lives every day, providing for our community in so many ways, encouraging health, involvement, fitness, and friendship. The YMCA tries to never turn away a friend in need. It is what makes the YMCA different from being just a gym. Your gift is one more way to say that we are all in this together.
